Refilling or swapping a 9kg BBQ bottle in Strathalbyn

Running out of gas halfway through cooking is one of those small domestic disasters that everybody has had at least once, and it is always on the day you have people over, because that is when you use the most of it and notice the least.

The short answer to the question is yes, we do 9kg BBQ bottles, and you have two ways of going about it.

Swap and Go

Bring in your empty and walk out with a full one. It takes about as long as paying for it. We do Swap and Go on 4kg and 9kg bottles, and it is the quickest option if you are not attached to the particular bottle you own.

Refills

If you would rather keep your own bottle, we refill 9kg and under while you wait. Plenty of people prefer this, either because the bottle is newer than the ones in the swap cage or because it is the one that fits the fitting on their barbecue and they are not starting that argument again.

One thing worth knowing about refills, and it is why we do them this way. We do not believe in taking bottles that still have gas in them, so if you bring one in with a bit left, you are not paying for gas you already own.

The bigger bottles, and where they sit

We refill 9kg and under. The 45kg and 18kg house bottles are a different arrangement altogether. Those are rented through Elgas rather than sold by us, so the rental is the distributor's arrangement rather than our product, and it is worth knowing what you are actually paying for and who you are paying it to.

What we do run is a delivery service for the region, which is the part most people do not know about. Strathalbyn on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons, the southern run on Thursday mornings out through Langhorne Creek, Belvedere, Clayton, Milang, Finniss and Tooperang, and on demand to Ashbourne, Macclesfield, Woodchester, Callington and Wistow around the existing runs.

Working out when to refill

The old trick of lifting the bottle to feel how heavy it is works well enough, and pouring warm water down the side and feeling for the cold line works better. Either way, the honest position is that it is never a question of whether you will run out of gas, only when, so having a spare in the shed is the actual answer.

When we are open

Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5pm, Saturday 8:30am to 4pm, Sunday 9am to 2pm. Open seven days, which is the bit that matters on a weekend when the barbecue is already lit.
