Bait, tackle and camping gear in Strathalbyn

Most people find out we do bait by accident, usually while buying something else entirely, and then look slightly surprised about it. Fair enough. A hardware shop with a freezer full of pilchards is not the obvious combination, but out here it makes a lot of sense, because you are already stopping for gas and ice and you would rather not make a second stop.

The bait, and it is frozen

It lives in a freezer and it comes out frozen, which is worth saying plainly so nobody turns up expecting a fresh bait tray. Pilchards in fresh 400g, brined 400g and 2kg blocks. Cockles in small and large. Prawns, squid heads, small squid, whitebait, saury, brined blood worms and tiger bait worms.

For berley there is Allrounder burley nuts and burley pellets in 1kg, and tuna oil in 250ml, 500ml and one litre.

The tackle section

It is a proper section rather than three items on a hook. Longshank snelled hooks in sizes 4, 6, 8 and 10. Whiting flasher rigs, ball sinkers and interlock snap swivels. Squid jigs in the Pro Rattler gold and black and the green. Sports lures in 20g, 40g and 60g, and soft plastics.

Then the gear that goes with it. A shrimp and prawn bait trap, a pyramid yabbie net, a belt type bait bucket, a foam box, a three in one knife sharpener, polarised sunnies and a straw hat.

And the two cheapest things in the whole section, which are the crab measure and the cockle measure. Those are the legal size gauges and they are the ones that keep you out of trouble, so they are worth a couple of dollars of anybody's money.

Ice, gas and the rest of the trip

Bagged ice for the esky. BBQ gas refills and Swap and Go on 4kg and 9kg bottles, so you are not finding out at the campsite. Camping gear, torches, cooking gear, water containers, fold up chairs and insect repellent. And 12V and automotive gear, which is the part caravanners come in for, plugs, lighting, battery chargers, jerry cans, tow ropes and booster cables.

Come in or ring ahead

We are open seven days, Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5pm, Saturday 8:30am to 4pm and Sunday 9am to 2pm, which covers most of the times a fishing trip actually starts. We are at Building 2, 34-52 Milnes Rd, Strathalbyn.
