Where to get DIY advice in Strathalbyn, and what to bring with you

Nobody starts knowing. I came into hardware as a second career and I learned most of it by having a go and getting it wrong and asking the bloke standing next to me, who in my case is Elroy, our shop manager, and who I have called Guru for years because the name fits. So when somebody comes in holding a broken bit of something and says they have no idea what they are doing, that is not an admission of anything. That is just the start of the job.

What to bring so the advice is actually worth something

The photo on your phone does more work than any description you can give me, so take one before you pull anything apart, and take another of the thing next to it, because half the time the answer is in what it is attached to. Bring the broken piece itself if you can get it out, because matching a thread or a fitting by eye off a description is guesswork and matching it against the real thing takes about 20 seconds. And write down your measurements rather than carrying them in your head, because everybody thinks they will remember and almost nobody does.

Measuring is the part that goes wrong most often, and it is almost never the tricky joinery or the finish that does people in. It is nearly always somebody who measured once and then committed to it. A tape and a pencil and a square between them cost less than one wasted length of timber, which is the whole argument for owning them.

The second one is buying a tool so cheap it fights you the entire way through the job. There is a real difference between a tool that is basic and a tool that is bad, and the bad one turns a Saturday afternoon into a Sunday as well. I would rather sell you one decent thing than three of the other kind.

Know which jobs are not yours to do

Some of it is simply not legal to do yourself, and that is worth knowing before you start rather than after. Gas regulators are a licensed job and we will refer you on to a licensed gas fitter for those, although we do replace pigtails in house and we soapy-water test every hook-up we do. Electrical work behind the wall is the same story. Knowing where that line sits is part of doing the job properly, and asking is free.
