The straight answer on dog parks in Strathalbyn

There is no fenced, off-lead dog park in Strathalbyn, and that is usually not what people are hoping to hear, especially if the dog has been sitting in the back of the car for a couple of hours and is ready to go off like a rocket. What we do have is a decent amount of open ground and a couple of genuinely good walks, so the dog still gets a proper run about, you just keep the lead in your hand for most of it.

Where to walk a dog in town

Soldiers Memorial Gardens sits right on the Angas River and it is the easy one, because it is flat and shaded and it is only a few minutes from the middle of town. Dogs go on a lead here, and it suits an older dog, or a young one that is still working out what a lead is for.

The Angas River Walking Trail is the one I would point you at if the dog actually needs to get tired. It follows the water, there is plenty to sniff along the way, and you are off the road the whole time, which matters a lot more than people expect when you are walking a dog that pulls.

The Strathalbyn Oval Complex has the open ground if you want somewhere your dog can move wider than a lead allows. Off-lead rules change between council areas and they get updated from time to time, so check the council's dog by-laws before you unclip anything, and be honest with yourself about your dog's recall, because an oval with no fence around it is not the place to find out that the recall is patchy.

The thing that catches people out here

The big one is heat, and it catches locals out as often as it catches travellers. A South Australian afternoon will cook a footpath and a dog walking on it has no shoes on, so put the back of your hand flat on the bitumen and hold it there, and if you cannot hold it comfortably then neither can they. The walk moves to early morning or to after the sun drops, and you carry water for the dog as well as for yourself, because there is not a tap on every corner and a hot dog on a long walk goes downhill quickly.

The other one is waste bags. These places stay dog friendly because people pick up after their dogs, so take more bags than you think you need.

Passing through with the van

If you are travelling rather than local, the rest of the stop is easy enough. We refill 9kg and smaller gas bottles and we do Swap and Go on 4kg and 9kg, so the barbecue bottle gets sorted while you are in town. The Mt Lofty water exchange is here too, where you drop an empty and take a full one, and there is bagged ice on the way out. If the lake is on the plan there is a proper camping and fishing section with frozen bait in the freezer.
