Getting a flyscreen repaired in Strathalbyn
A torn flyscreen is one of those jobs that sits there for a year. It is not urgent, it is not expensive, and every summer evening it lets in everything the screen was there to keep out. The good news is that it is a much smaller job than most people assume, and you have two ways of going about it.
Bring it in and we will do it
We replace and repair flyscreens for windows and doors at the shop. Take the screen or the door out, bring it in, and we re-mesh it. Where a frame is past saving we make a new one, which happens more often with older aluminium frames that have gone soft in the corners.
It is all made and repaired at the shop rather than at your place. That is worth saying plainly, because people sometimes expect somebody to turn up at the house, and that is not how this one works.
Or do it yourself
Re-meshing a screen is genuinely a beginner job. The mesh is the bit that tears, the frame is almost always fine, and swapping the mesh is quicker, cheaper and less wasteful than replacing the whole thing.
What you need is the mesh, the spline, which is the rubber cord that wedges the mesh into the channel, a spline roller to press it in evenly, a knife to trim the excess and a tape measure. We have all of it in store.
Choosing the mesh
Standard fibreglass mesh is fine for most windows. Pet resistant mesh is much tougher and it is the one to get if you have a cat that treats the back door as a climbing frame, or a dog that puts its nose through the screen every time somebody knocks. It costs more and it lasts a great deal longer in a house with animals in it.
Three things that make a DIY job go well
- Check the frame before you start. If it is bent or the corners have gone loose, sort that first, because a good mesh in a bad frame will not stay tight.
- Keep the mesh taut as you roll the spline in. A saggy screen looks wrong and it pulls out of the channel within a season.
- Trim after the spline is fully seated, not before, and use a fresh blade so you cut rather than drag.
