The Best Fishing Spots Near Strathalbyn
One of the good things about living here is that you are never far from somewhere to put a line in, and most of the spots worth going to are inside half an hour. These are the six that come up most often when people are talking about it in the shop.
Milang, on Lake Alexandrina
Milang sits right on the lake and it is the easiest big water to get to from Strathalbyn. There is room to spread out, it suits somebody who has never done it before as much as it suits a regular, and there are shaded spots to sit afterwards if you have packed something to eat. Early is better than late, which is true of nearly all of these.
Currency Creek
Quiet, pretty, and a long way from anybody. The bushland around it makes it a decent spot to take the family even if only one of you is actually fishing. Take a hat and sunscreen in the warmer months, because there is not a lot of shade on the bank.
Goolwa Wharf
About half an hour down the road, and the wharf is a good one when you want variety, because you are fishing where the river meets the Coorong. It also works when the kids are only half interested, since there is plenty of room for them to be somewhere safe while you concentrate.
Hindmarsh Island
Another short drive, and you get access to fresh and salt within a few minutes of each other, which is not something you can say about many places. Worth staying for the sunset if you have the time.
The Finniss River
The pick if you want quiet more than you want variety. Calm water, good banks, and it goes well with a walk if the fish are not interested. This is the one I would send somebody to who wants an afternoon out rather than a serious session.
Mount Bold Reservoir
Further out and up into the hills, so it is a drive rather than a duck out, and the landscape is completely different to everywhere else on this list. Reservoir access in South Australia comes with conditions attached and they change, so check what is currently allowed before you load the car.
Sort these out before you go
- Know the current rules. Size limits, bag limits and closed seasons all move around, and they are not the same at every one of these spots. Check the current recreational fishing rules for South Australia rather than going off what somebody told you last year.
- Match the gear to the water. Bait, lures and spinners all have their place and the right answer is different at the lake than it is on the river, so take more than one option.
- Take water and food. Time disappears when you are fishing and there is nothing at most of these spots.
- Tell somebody where you are going. Especially the further out ones.
- Take your rubbish home. Line and hooks in particular, because they do real damage to the birds.

Heading out for the day, or passing through
We are open seven days and we are the easy stop on the way out of town. We do gas bottle refills on 9kg and under and Swap-and-Go on 4kg and 9kg, we have bagged ice, and we run the Mt Lofty Springwater exchange, so you can drop an empty 11 litre bottle and take a full one. The camping and fishing gear is all in the one spot. We are at Building 2, 34-52 Milnes Rd, open Mon to Fri 7:30am to 5pm, Sat 8:30am to 4pm and Sun 9am to 2pm.
