Turnips are an under-rated winter root, sweet and tender when grown well and brilliant in a slow-cooked stew. Milan Purple Top is an early variety, so you get to harvest sooner than most.
The roots are flat with handsome purple tops and flesh that stays tender rather than woody. Sow straight into rows, thin the seedlings so each root has room, and keep the water steady so they swell evenly.
It is not fussy about soil but does best in a rich, light bed in full sun. Pull them while they are still a good size rather than leaving them to get too big and coarse.
