A good cabbage is the backbone of plenty of winter cooking, and Sugarloaf is one of the most reliable you can grow. The conical heads are crisp, sweet and can push up to three kilos with good soil.
Start the seed in punnets or seed boxes, then transplant the seedlings out and firm them in well. Cabbages are hungry plants, so prepare the bed with plenty of organic matter and keep the water up as the heads form.
Watch for the usual cabbage moth over the warmer months and net or check the leaves regularly. A bit of attention early pays off at harvest.
Full sowing and transplant details are in the tabs below. Ask in store if you want a hand keeping the pests off your brassicas.
