Aquilegia, or granny's bonnet, is a cottage-garden classic that brings height and old-fashioned charm to a border. The long-spurred flowers are beautifully shaped and come in a bright mix of colours.

It is a perennial, so once it settles in it returns each year and gently self-seeds to fill gaps. Sow the seed thinly, then transplant the seedlings out once they are a few centimetres tall, spacing them so each has room to clump up.

It is an easy-going plant that takes sun or part shade, which makes it handy for those in-between spots. Keep the water up through dry spells and mulch to hold the moisture in.
