Homebrewing on a Budget: Successful Brewing without Emptying Your Wallet

There's a simple joy that awaits you at the heart of every bottle of beer you craft yourself; every pint pulled, every swirl, sniff, and sip repeating the affirmation that you are the master brewer of your domain.

To many homebrew enthusiasts, this joy is multiplied tenfold by the cost-saving benefits that come with it. With the right tact and a bit of know-how, you'll gradually transform from a novice in your fledgling brewing venture to the cost-efficient brewmaster of your home, enjoying both the process and the pocket-friendly benefits.

Most people assume brewing at home means spending a small fortune. However given the cost of beer off the shelf at the bottleo-o nowadays, you can get into your own set up for less than a couple of hundred bucks and be reaping the rewards in under a month. .

I had a customer telling me a story of his blind testing experiment with Coopers Homebrew Stout and a long neck of Coopers Stout from BWS. "Cost me $10 for the long neck and whilst the original is fractionally better than my homebrew, I'd rather keep the $9 in my pocket because my long neck cost me a dollar, because my stuff is pretty damn good."

So what do you need to kick start your brewing adventure?

  1. 30L fermenter, new ones come with an airlock, stick on thermometer and sanitising sachet.
  2. Hydrometer
  3. Mixing Paddle
  4. Your favourite Liquid Malt Extract flavour. We stock Coopers Homebrew
  5. Dextrose or Brew Enhancer

Or you can simply purchase a start up brewery kit. These often come with your first brew tin inside, however depending on what you drink it may not be something you want to brew.

And once it's ready

  1. Bottles and Caps
  2. Something to cap the bottles with
  3. Carbonating drops or a sugar priming spoon

Patience and Time

That's it. There really isn't that much to beginning your brewing journey.
