When a hammer head starts working loose on its timber handle, a wedge driven into the top of the handle spreads the timber and locks the head back on tight.

These are zinc alloy wedges for timber handled hammers, two to a card. Sit the head fully down on the handle, saw off any timber standing proud, then tap the wedge into the end grain across the handle so it spreads the timber against the eye of the head. A loose head is a hazard as much as an annoyance, so it's worth the five minutes.
