A long, narrow canvas drop sheet that runs the length of a wall, so you can paint the skirting and the bottom of the wall without dripping on the carpet.

It's 9oz canvas at about 1.5m by 3.65m, and canvas soaks up a drip where a plastic sheet lets it run and gets walked through the house. It's heavy enough to lie flat without taping down, and it doesn't slide under a ladder the way plastic does. When the job's done you shake it out, wash it if it needs it, and it's ready for next time.
