Zucchini is one of those plants that pays you back fast. Get the timing right and a couple of plants will hand you tender, sweet fruit week after week through summer.

Lebanese is a heavy-cropping variety with pear-shaped fruit and light skin. The trick is to pick them small and often. Leave one to swell into a marrow and the plant slows right down, so a quick pick every few days keeps the whole thing going.

Give it a sunny, sheltered spot and rich soil, keep the water up, and stay on top of the weeds. That is most of the job done.
