If you only grow one tomato, Grosse Lisse is a safe bet. It is the variety that fills the back fence of half the gardens in town, and for good reason. The fruit is big and globe-shaped and the plant just keeps producing.

Start the seed in punnets, then plant out into rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Tomatoes are heavy feeders, so a well-prepared bed pays off. Tie the plant to a sturdy stake and pinch out the laterals, those side shoots in the leaf joints, to put the plant's energy into bigger fruit.

Keep the water even to avoid splitting, and feed once the fruit sets.

Full sowing and staking details are in the tabs below. Pop in and we will talk you through a cracking tomato season.
