Thyme is one of those herbs you reach for constantly once it is in the garden. It works through meats, soups, roast vegetables and a good stuffing, and a little goes a long way.
Being a hardy perennial, it sets up once and keeps giving for years. Sow the fine seed thinly and barely cover it, then be patient while it germinates. A warm, sunny spot with free-draining soil is exactly what it wants, and it copes well with dry spells once established.
Pick sprigs as you need them through the season. If you want to dry some, take the leaves before the plant flowers for the best flavour.
Full sowing details are in the tabs below. Ask in store if you want a hand starting a low-fuss herb patch.
