Peppermint is the herb for fresh tea, a lift in a salad or a garnish on dessert. The leaves are strong, dark and properly minty.
It is a hardy perennial that actually likes the spots other herbs sulk in, the damp and the part-shade. Press the seed lightly into the surface rather than burying it, keep it moist, and give it a little time to get going.
One word of advice from experience. Mint loves to roam, so most gardeners grow it in a pot or a sunken container to keep it in check. When you want to store some, freezing keeps the flavour far better than drying.
