California Wonder is the bell capsicum most of us picture, big blocky fruit with thick walls that is made for stuffing and roasting. Grown at home it is sweeter and crunchier than the trayed version.

The fruit starts green and ripens to a bright red, so you can pick at whichever stage you prefer. Start the seed in punnets, then plant out once the cold has well and truly gone.

Give it a warm, sheltered position, steady water and a bit of feed as the fruit sets. A stake or two helps once the plant is carrying a load.
