Beetroot is hard to beat for value in a home patch. One sowing gives you weeks of sweet roots for salads, roasting or the juicer.

Forono is a cylindrical variety, which is handy because the long, even roots give you tidy slices and pack neatly into a jar if you like pickling. The flavour is sweet and the texture smooth.

Sow into well-drained soil in a sunny spot, keep the water and feed up, and stay on top of the weeds while the seedlings are small. From there it largely looks after itself.
