    A scutch comb has a row of toothed edges instead of a flat blade. As you strike it with a club hammer it doesn't just pry off old render, it roughs up the surface underneath in the process. That texture is exactly what a fresh render coat needs to bond properly instead of sliding straight off.

    At 38mm this Trojan comb sits between the narrow and wide ends of the range, wide enough to clear a decent area per strike but still manageable in tighter corners. It also doubles as a way to rake out old mortar and cut clean channels between bricks.
