    A scutch comb has a row of toothed edges instead of a flat blade, so as you strike it with a club hammer it doesn't just pry off old render, it roughs up the surface underneath in the process. That texture is exactly what a fresh render coat needs to bond properly instead of sliding straight off.

    At 25mm this Trojan comb suits standard domestic brickwork and tighter joints, and it doubles as a way to rake out old mortar and cut clean channels between bricks.
