New Zealand sphagnum moss holds water hard against its own weight, up to twenty times over, which makes it the standard choice for orchids and mounted ferns that need constant moisture without ever sitting wet. A small 150g pack expands out to around 10 litres once soaked, so it goes further than the size on the shelf suggests.

Line hanging baskets with it, wrap it around staghorns and elkhorns, or use it as a top dressing to keep moisture close to the surface where shallow roots can reach it.

A little goes a long way once it's expanded.
