    For deep, clean holes through solid timber, an auger bit pulls its own weight.

    This Sutton D511 medium auger runs 270mm long, so it reaches through fence posts and thick beams in one go. The screw point at the tip draws the bit into the wood, so you are not leaning on the drill, and a single spur scores the edge of the hole first for a cleaner finish with less tear-out.

    It is alloy steel with a solid core and wide flutes, so it stays rigid and clears the shavings as it cuts. The three eighths inch hex shank grips hard in the chuck. It suits kiln-dried hardwood and softwood, MDF and particleboard. Green, sappy timber will clog it, so keep it for seasoned wood.
