The Best Times to Mow Your Lawn During Hot Summer Months

Mowing your lawn during the summer isn’t just about keeping it neat and tidy; it’s also about protecting your grass from the intense heat. Timing, technique, and the right products can make a huge difference in maintaining a lush and healthy lawn.

Here’s how to do it right, with some fantastic products from Strathalbyn H Hardware.

1. Mow Early in the Morning

The best time to mow your lawn is early in the morning. The grass is cooler, and the temperatures are still manageable. Mowing in the morning minimises heat stress on your lawn, and it’s also a more pleasant time for you to work outdoors.

After mowing, consider applying a product like LawnPorn’s 'Launch+’ to give your lawn a nutrient boost that enhances growth and protects against heat stress.

2. Avoid Mowing During Peak Heat

Mowing between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest can severely stress your grass, leading to browning and damage. If you must mow later, wait until the late afternoon when temperatures start to cool. Keep your grass healthy with Neutrog’s organic fertilisers, designed to nourish your lawn without burning it in the heat.

We carry a full range of Neutrog products at Strathalbyn H Hardware.

3. Late Afternoon Mowing

If morning mowing isn’t an option, late afternoon is a suitable alternative. By this time, the sun’s intensity has decreased, and your lawn has a chance to recover before the cooler night temperatures. To ensure a clean cut, make sure your mower blades are sharp.

We stock JakMax replacement mower blades and trimmer line for when your equipment needs an upgrade.

4. Keep Your Mower Blades Sharp

Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, causing stress and making your lawn more susceptible to disease. Sharpen your blades regularly or replace them with new blades.

5. Mow at the Right Height

In summer, keep your grass longer—around 7–10 cm tall. This height helps shade the soil, reducing evaporation and promoting deep root growth. Cutting too much at once can weaken the grass, so follow the one-third rule: never remove more than a third of the grass blade in a single mow.

For fertiliser, use Brunnings lawn products to keep your grass lush and well-fed without overstressing it.

6. Avoid Mowing Wet Grass

Mowing when the grass is wet can lead to uneven cuts, clogged mower blades, and an increased risk of fungal diseases. Wait until your lawn is dry to mow for the best results.

7. Mulch Your Clippings

Mulching your grass clippings returns valuable nutrients to the soil, helping to retain moisture and reduce the need for additional fertiliser. Consider investing in a mulching mower or using a mulching attachment.

Timing your mowing and using top-quality products can keep your lawn looking lush even in the peak of summer.
