The Ultimate Guide to Maintaining Weatherboards

How to Keep Your Weatherboards in Tip-Top Shape with the Right Paint
Weatherboards can give your home that classic charm—whether you've got a coastal shack, a countryside cottage, or a period-style home with sweet verandahs and timber fretwork. But with all that good ol’ charm comes a little elbow grease. If you’re nodding your head because your weatherboards are starting to look a bit sad and flakey, you’re in the right place, my friend.
Paint not only styles up your house, it protects it from the harsh effects of sun, wind, and moisture. And let’s face it—we do get all four seasons in a day sometimes. So let me take you on a stroll through keeping your weatherboards looking fresh, strong and story-worthy for many years.
Weatherboards: Why the Fuss?
These feather-edged beauties have been around for yonks. They’re loved for their rustic look and natural feel. But unlike brick or stone, timber is much more vulnerable to cracking, rotting, warping, you name it. That’s where quality paint comes in—it helps seal and protect while making your house the best-looking one on the block.
Start with a Clean Slate
If you’re repainting weatherboards, surface prep is a must. I know it’s tempting to just brush over flaking paint and call it done, but trust me—taking the time here will save you more work later. Start by cleaning off dirt, mildew and old paint. Sugar soap, a bucket of water, and a good stiff brush does wonders.
Then inspect the boards for damage. Soft spots, rough patches, peeling areas—all need some love. Sand them down and if needed, replace boards that are completely cactus. Wait for a good stretch of dry weather too—you’ll want those boards as dry as a chip before the paint hits them.
The Power of Primer
Now here’s a golden rule: Never skip priming, especially on raw timber. Primers help the colour stick and extend the life of your topcoat, while giving added protection against weather damage. For bare spots or full-body jobs, a wood primer gives your boards the best chance to age gracefully.
Choosing the Right Exterior Paint
This is where things can get a wee bit confusing. Matte or gloss? Oil or water-based? It’s a lot to consider—so let’s break it down simply.
For weatherboards, I always recommend a high-quality exterior acrylic. Why? It’s flexible and can move with timber, which means fewer cracks and peel-offs over time. It’s easy to clean, quick to dry, and smells way less intense. Be sure to look for paint made to resist UV, mould and dirt too. Trust me—this small feature pays off big time.
One of my absolute go-tos is Haymes Paint Ultratrim Gloss. It’s a water-based enamel that's as tough as they come, and gives a classic shiny finish that shows off your home’s lines beautifully.
This paint is seriously hardworking–with its super coverage and smooth finish, it levels up the look of every weatherboard it touches. And if you've got kids, dogs or wild guests stumbling into dirty walls, you'll be pleased with how washable and durable it is.
What About Finish?
Paint sheen depends on your personal style and practicality. Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
- Gloss or semi-gloss: Best for weatherboards. They're durable and easy to wipe clean
- Low sheen: Modern, subtle, but more prone to showing marks and may not last quite as long outdoors
When trying to strike the right balance between statement and slap-on-the-walls kind of simple, most homeowners opt for semi-gloss on boards and gloss on trims. That way, everything pops just the right amount.
Don't Forget the Colour Play
This is your chance to tell a story with your home. A traditional white can lift and refresh a timeworn facade. Soft greys create that relaxed modern cottage mood. Or maybe a bold navy or heritage green is more your vibe.
Do a few tester pots before committing. The same colour can look totally different depending on your light. Our team at Strathalbyn H Hardware specialises in colour matching, and trust me—nothing hits better than nailing that perfect shade that makes your heart sing every time you pull in the driveway.
Tools That Make a Difference
Besides good paint, don’t skimp on your gear. Quality brushes and rollers affect the smoothness of your finish just as much as the paint itself. Ask us in store and we’ll guide you to the right brushes for the charm-chasers.
Keep the Love Going
Once your boards are looking mint, give them a bit of yearly attention. A gentle wash with the hose and a soft brush can keep dirt, grime and bird gifts to a minimum. Think of it like a mini-spa day for your house. It may not ask for much, but a bit of TLC once in a while will mean fewer full-scale repaints in the long run.
After all, helping clients keep their homes beautiful while feeling confident in doing it themselves—that’s what I’m all about. There’s something really satisfying about stepping back, brush in hand, and soaking in the brand new feel of a house you’ve worked hard to care for.
