How to Choose Between Matt, Low Sheen and Semi Gloss

The wall paint finish is the decision, not the colour

If your room's got good bones but bad vibes, there's one move that makes a visible difference without swinging a hammer, and it's picking the right interior paint finish. Most people agonise over the colour and then grab whichever sheen is closest to hand, which is backwards, because the sheen is what decides whether the wall still looks good in two years.

Choosing the right sheen, a quick field guide

Here's one of the most common questions we hear in the shop: which finish do I actually need?

Simple breakdown:

• Matt: hides imperfections like a champ. It's soft and subtle, and it suits adult bedrooms and ceilings. This is the one to reach for when the wall underneath has seen some life.
• Low sheen: your everyday hero. Durable and easy to clean, it works in practically every room, and it's what most people should be using through a hallway or a living area.
• Semi gloss: best for trims and wet zones. Higher shine and a lot more wipeable, and it's the standard answer for skirtings, door frames, bathrooms and laundries.

Why the wet rooms are different

Bathrooms and laundries cop steam and splashes, and a kitchen is not far behind, so they want a finish with enough sheen to shed moisture rather than soak it up. That's the whole reason semi gloss exists on a trim and it's why a flat matt in a laundry goes patchy inside a year.
